Optimal Solutions

Engineering Management Experience

Construction Design and Plant Engineering: We have worked on the following projects: Petrochemical, manufacturing, research facilities, food processing and packaging, mining, power plants (nuclear, wind, gas), water and wastewater, flower mills, etc. In our experience it is automation, electrical engineering, and energy management, that are the weak disciplines within corporate and plant engineering departments, or at least they are the weak points, which we understand well enough - unlike the mechanical or chemical engineers that are likely to be found in charge of engineering departments and projects.

Electrical Engineering: This discipline is normally lacking in quality compared to other disciplines - because the overall engineering management is normally done by mechanical, process, or chemical engineers, who have to rely on expertise of the electrical department, whose chief and project electrical engineers are well aware of the main boss' low electrical expertise. Unfortunately what happens in this type of environment is usually an inefficient electrical department where, among other deficiencies, purchases are often based on personal relationships with the suppliers, not on sound engineering principles.

Automation: Revamp projects normally bring in new computers, PLC's, or DCS systems, but do little to automate better the process, line, or a machine. When replacing the brains of the systems it is a good time to look at the system as a whole and truly automate it, not just install new computer technology. When managing this type of projects, we talk to everyone associated with the process and equipment to be controlled, from managers to line workers, plus we make our own field observations; based on that we write process description - controls philosophy. We always try to write it in a way as to make the system most efficient, cost effective, and reliable.

Where we can help most is to evaluate automation and electrical engineering projects and departments, and to suggest solutions, possibly help in providing the solutions.
